Why Grocie?

I created Grocie for a few reasons.

Reason #1: It’s Perfect for College Students

Back in college, I decided to find my own place for a taste of independence (not what I expected, lol). Like many who go that route, buying and cooking your own food is key to surviving on your own.

I remember scouring recipes on YouTube or sites like AllRecipes, but keeping track of ingredients was a hassle. They’d end up as forgotten screenshots in my photo library or lost links in my notes (yes, I send messages to myself as reminders). That’s when the idea for an app to handle this effortlessly hit me.

I tried other apps, but none offered an easy way to store and share recipes online. Plus, for basic features (like storing more than 3 recipes), you had to pay a subscription. I thought, “Are you kidding me?!”

Reason #2: Streamlining Grocery Runs (Thanks to My Wife)

Fast-forward a few years: I got married to my amazing wife. Cooking at home became even more essential to keep our bank balance in check and avoid eating out constantly.

One big challenge? Grocery shopping for 3-4 recipes per week often meant duplicate ingredients like salt, tomatoes, avocados, or peppers. I’d grab everything for one recipe, head to the meat department, and realize the next one needed more tomatoes too—cue multiple trips back to the produce aisle.

That’s why Grocie lets you consolidate ingredients into a single list, combining quantities so you know exactly how much to buy. No more backtracking like the old me!

Reason #3: I Love Building Stuff

As a software engineer, I enjoy creating things—like many of my peers. I started this project because I’ve always wanted to build an app and launch it on the App Store and Google Play. So, I did!

I wanted to work on something I’m passionate about that I could improve over time. This has been a fantastic learning experience and mostly fun (except when it breaks, lol). Ultimately, I aimed to build something people would appreciate—making their lives easier.

The app isn’t perfect, but Grocie’s goal has always been user satisfaction. Any feedback is welcome in the app!
